Singing for Life: Health, Vitality & Community for Older Men

Singing is more than a fun hobby. It is one of the best activities older men can do to stay healthy, active, and connected with others. Research shared by the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) shows that singing in a group can improve physical health, brain function, and emotional well-being. It also helps men build friendships and enjoy a greater sense of purpose.

1. Physical Health Benefits

Singing Is Good Exercise

Singing gives your lungs a workout. It helps you breathe more deeply, improves posture, and strengthens the muscles used for breathing and singing.

Boosts Your Immune System and Reduces Stress

Singing improves blood flow and helps your body produce infection-fighting antibodies. It also releases endorphins, the body’s natural “feel-good” chemicals, which can lower stress and even help reduce pain.

Keeps Your Voice Strong

Regular singing keeps your vocal cords healthy and flexible. This can help you maintain a clear, strong speaking voice as you age.

2. Brain Health Benefits

Gives Your Brain a Workout

When you sing, many parts of your brain work together. You use memory, listening skills, coordination, concentration, and emotions all at the same time.

Improves Memory and Focus

Following your own part in four-part harmony while reading music, watching the director, and listening to others challenges your brain in healthy ways. It is much more engaging than doing puzzles alone.

Connects Music and Memories

Favorite songs often bring back special memories and emotions. Singing can help keep the mind active and may even benefit people with mild memory loss or dementia.

3. Caring for Your Voice

Drink Plenty of Water

Staying hydrated keeps your vocal cords healthy and helps prevent strain or tiredness while singing.

Warm Up Gently

Simple warm-up exercises, such as lip trills or singing through a straw, prepare your voice and help prevent injury.

Pace Yourself

Taking breaks, sitting when needed, and avoiding overuse helps your voice stay strong for years to come.

4. Friendship and Community

Stay Connected

Weekly rehearsals give you something to look forward to. They create friendships, reduce loneliness, and help you feel part of a welcoming group.

Share the Joy of Singing

There is nothing quite like singing a beautiful barbershop chord with others. It creates a strong sense of teamwork, accomplishment, and joy.
